2024 Ault Park Racing Series

The series was founded in 1985 by Andy Callahan the original owner of Oakley Cycles who handed the series over to David Ariosa and Kathleen Krumme when he sold his shop. Throughout the initial 19 years Chief Referee services were handled by Chuck Doll. In 2004 Bill Lorenz took over the series when it became a part of the QCW repertoire of events. All riders and spectators are welcome to this friendly and competitive event.

5 Races Each Night

40K & Both 20K’s Format

The weekly races and overall series are run as a points race, similar to what would normally be run on a velodrome:

  • Riders sprint every 5 laps, with the first 4 riders being awarded points – 5, 3, 2, 1.

  • The middle and final sprints are worth double points – 10, 6, 4, 2.

  • Points are cumulative over the five-week series; the rider with the most points after five weeks wins the series.

  • All riders are awarded 1 point weekly.

  • Ties on total points go to the rider who scored points latest in the race.

  • No bonus points for riders who lap the field.

  • Riders who lap the field will proceed to earn sprint points as part of the same group as the rest of the field. 

  • Lapped riders may be pulled at officials’ discretion.

  • Lapped riders must ride at the back of the field and may not assist, pace or leadout others, or participate in sprints for points or primes. Not applicable to the main field when lapped by less than ten riders

  • Points sprints are announced with a bell.

18K Race Format

This race runs in the standard criterium format with a single sprint at the finish determining rider placing for men and women. 

  • Runs concurrently with the 7:10 – 20K race. 

  • Lap and distance are set by the lead riders in the 20K.

  • All 18K riders finish on the same lap.

  • Lap card #3 the horn sounds, lap card #2 sprint – race over.

  • Riders must stop immediately after their sprint and may NOT continue around the course with the 20K riders. 

  • Men and Women are scored separately.

  • The top five finishers each week will receive series points – 6, 4, 3, 2, 1.

  • All riders are awarded 1 point weekly.

  • Points are cumulative over the five-week series; the rider with the most points after five weeks wins the series.

  • Men and Women categories are racing for separate prizes and awards.

Series Payouts & Plaques

Are given to the top riders who have ridden a minimum of two weeks. Minimum average rider numbers must be met as noted above for any race to be eligible for payouts and plaques.

6:30 – 20K payouts & plaques three places each for both 50+ & 60+. Only four total riders scored per sprint. 

7:10 – 18K Top five finishers will receive series points 6 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1. Women and men are scored separately.

7:10 – 20K ALL riders are eligible for the same payouts and five plaques. Four riders scored per sprint across all riders.

8:00 – 40K ALL riders are eligible for the same payouts and five plaques. A “bonus” payout and plaque will go to the highest points earner who is NOT a Men Category 1/2 rider. Four riders scored per sprint across all riders.

Entry Fee 

$30 per night ($15 per night for Juniors), free to QCW members racing in the current Team QCW kit. Online registration is on BikeReg. One-time $5 surcharge for entry forms completed on-site. Complete paperwork on BikeReg and save $5, no entry fee payment required until you show up to race. Online registration closes prior to the first night of racing and will NOT reopen.

Second Race Fee: Riding a second race is $5 nightly.

  • Riders must sign the rider release WEEKLY.

  • Riders will be issued one bib number for the ENTIRE series. Replacement numbers subject to a $5 surcharge.

  • Series payouts are contingent on average rider turnout per category as noted above.

  • Riders must race the category displayed on their license. One-day license available for 20K, & 18K races only.

  • Distances subject to change based on the officials’ and promoters’ discretion.

  • Races held rain or shine. Storms may shorten or eliminate specific races to maintain the schedule.

  • Entry fees are non-refundable.

Course

Located on a slope the 1km oval course rises and descends approximately 55 feet per lap. Totaling 2200 feet of climbing in twenty-five miles over forty laps. The 40k will cover this distance in one hour. The surface is fairly smooth with one slight corner and one speedy downhill with a few bumps, followed by an uphill sprint with the sun at your back. It is also closed to traffic and perfect for both new and experienced racers. The Strava link is Ault Park Race Loop.

Directions and Parking

Ault Park is located at 5090 Observatory Circle. The most parking spots are on Observatory Avenue. Park as close as you can to Observatory Circle. You can also park on Heekin avenue past the road closed sign. There will be police officers at both intersections with Observatory Circle to block cars from entering.
